Boulders Beach, located in Simon’s Town just outside Cape Town, is a must-visit for international travelers looking to experience something truly special—swimming with African penguins! This picturesque beach is famous for its colony of endangered African penguins, stunning granite boulders, and calm turquoise waters.

How to Get to Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach is part of Table Mountain National Park, and travelers can reach it by car, private transfer, or guided tour. If you're driving from Cape Town, take the scenic route along the M4 (Main Road), passing through the charming coastal suburbs of Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, and Fish Hoek before arriving in Simon’s Town.

Once you reach Boulders, make sure to use the correct entrance! The main access point for swimming with the penguins is via Seaforth Road, which leads to the Boulders Beach entry gate. Many visitors mistakenly stop at Foxy Beach, which is a boardwalk viewing area where you can watch the penguins from a distance but cannot swim with them.

Swimming with the Penguins

Yes, you can actually swim alongside these adorable tuxedoed birds! Boulders Beach is sheltered by massive granite rocks, creating a calm and shallow bay perfect for a refreshing dip. While the penguins roam freely, they are still wild animals—so be sure to give them space and avoid touching them.

Daily Visitor Limits & Why You Should Arrive Early

To preserve the natural habitat and ensure a peaceful experience, Boulders Beach has a daily visitor limit. During peak season (December to February), it fills up quickly, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning to secure your spot. The beach is open from 08:00 AM to 17:00 PM (April – September) and 07:00 AM to 19:30 PM (October – March).

Costs & Entrance Fees

As of 2024, the entrance fees for international visitors are:

  • Adults: R192 per person

  • Children (2-11 years): R96 per child

South African residents with ID pay a lower fee, but for international travelers, the prices are fixed. Payments can be made at the entrance gate, but it’s best to carry cash or a card just in case.

Pack a Picnic & Sunbathe All Day

Unlike many tourist-heavy beaches, Boulders Beach is perfect for a relaxing day out. Pack a picnic basket, bring a blanket, and enjoy the soft sand and sunshine while watching the penguins waddle around. You can also sunbathe on the smooth boulders or take a break under the shade of the rocks.

Final Tips for a Great Visit

  • Arrive early to avoid crowds and secure your entry before the daily limit is reached.

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water—the African sun can be intense.

  • Avoid feeding or touching the penguins, as they are protected wildlife.
