There are various walking and hiking routes, each providing a different experience for walkers, depending on your fitness level and what kind of adventure you're seeking.

Here are some popular walking routes on Table Mountain

1. Platteklip Gorge

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

  • Distance: 3 kilometers (1.86 miles)

  • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • Description: Platteklip Gorge is one of the most well-known and popular routes to ascend Table Mountain. The path is steep but straightforward, with a well-marked trail. It’s an intense hike, so be prepared for a challenging climb. The reward at the top is a magnificent view of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding area.

2. India Venster

  • Difficulty: Challenging

  • Distance: 5 kilometers (3.1 miles)

  • Duration: 2 to 3 hours

  • Description: India Venster is another popular route that offers a more scenic and adventurous ascent. It’s a bit more technical than Platteklip Gorge, with some rock scrambling and exposure to heights. The route begins near the cable car station, providing stunning views of the city and the ocean along the way.

3. Skeleton Gorge

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

  • Distance: 6 kilometers (3.7 miles)

  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours

  • Description: Starting from the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Skeleton Gorge takes you through lush forest, up streams, and eventually to the top of Table Mountain. It’s a beautiful hike with more variety in terrain, featuring shaded forest sections and stunning views as you near the summit. It's a longer hike than Platteklip Gorge, but it’s equally rewarding.

4. Cable Car Down (Optional)

  • Description: For those who don't want to walk both up and down, there is the option to take the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway down after hiking to the summit. The cable car offers fantastic panoramic views of the city and is a great way to complete your hike without tiring yourself out.

Tips for Walking Table Mountain:

  • Wear sturdy shoes: Proper hiking boots or shoes are essential for comfort and safety, especially on the rocky terrain.

  • Bring enough water: There is limited access to water along the trails, so be sure to bring enough for your hike.

  • Dress in layers: The weather on Table Mountain can be unpredictable, with sudden changes in temperature and strong winds, so dress in layers to stay comfortable.

  • Start early: If you're planning to hike, start early in the morning to avoid the heat and to ensure you have enough time to complete the route before dark.

  • Weather conditions: Always check the weather before you go. It can get windy, and clouds can roll in quickly, reducing visibility.
